esure.com: Three million motorists distracted by smoking

Around three million motorists have admitted to being distracted while driving because of their smoking habits, according to new research.

The study by esure.com also found that 80 per cent of smokers have admitted to taking their hands off the wheel to light a cigarette, while 26 per cent of drivers have taken their eyes off the road when they have dropped one whilst driving.

Discussing the findings, esure's head of risk and underwriting Mike Pickard said that drivers should not take risks that could lead to hefty insurance claims, saying: "We advise drivers to always pay the road their full attention.

"Any activities that distract or cause a driver to lose concentration or take their hands off the wheel should be avoided."

The findings by esure, which is one of the UK's leading online insurance companies, have been released after research by Sainsbury's last month revealed that the price of insurance premiums in Britain had risen by £20 over the past year.

Premiums for men rose by 5.2 per cent, while cover for women experienced an average rise of 3.1 per cent.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18318348-ADNFCR
